After a three month hiatus, road works will soon resume on Riccarton Road.
Since 2016 contractors have been working along Riccarton Road to replace and upgrade damaged underground pipes and to introduce bus priority measures along the busy thoroughfare.
Road works will resume soon on Riccarton Road.
Christchurch City Council paused the work in December 2017 in order to minimise the disruption to local businesses over the busy Christmas season and through the summer trading period. During this time the project teams have been looking at options to considerably reduce the timeframes for the remaining works to be completed.
“The business owners had raised concerns about the impacts of the roadworks on their customers and we took that feedback on board and made the call to pause the work over the summer.
“We need to get the contractors back on the job though because we want to get work on the road completed before the worst of the winter weather sets in,’’ says Council City Services General Manager David Adamson.
Beginning on 18 March, contractors will be concentrating on completing the kerbing, ground investigation and water main installation work. They will also be installing traffic lights at the railway crossing. These works should take about two weeks to complete.
During April, the underground pipe work at Harakeke Street will be completed in order to commission the new sewer main. This means Harakeke Street will be closed at its junction with Riccarton Road, and Mandeville Street will be left in and left out only.
“Over May and June the road surface will be repaired. Originally this work was scheduled to take four months but we’ve worked with the contractor to find ways of shortening the construction period and, provided we get favourable weather, they should be able to get the work done in two months,’’ Mr Adamson says.
“Two lanes of traffic, one in each direction, will be maintained throughout the works during the daytime, but there may be some lane closures overnight.
“We appreciate the road works are an inconvenience for businesses along Riccarton Road but we are working to get this project completed as soon as possible,'' Mr Adamson says.
