Speed limits in Riccarton Rd in the main shopping area seem set to be reduced to 30kph, and nearby streets between there and Riccarton Bush are likely to follow suit.
In conjunction with the new median strip and tree planting in Riccarton Rd, the City Council wants to reduce the speed limit there. And it proposes reducing the nearby streets similarly to discourage short-cutting and to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists.
The proposals have the support of the Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board, which last night heard submissions from local residents that broadly supported the plan.
The council had originally suggested a limit of 40kph for surrounding streets, but after hearing from residents has agreed that 30kph is the better option. The new limits now only need final approval from the council.
